Imperial Provinces
These had just been conquered or were in the process of being subdued, and as a result, required the presence of more than one legion. The governor here (legatus) was chosen by and reported directly to the princeps. The princeps decided their length and term of office.

Senatorial Provinces
Were generally peaceful, requiring no more than one legion to oversee them. The governor (proconsul) and officials were chosen by and answerable to the senate. Their term of office was one year.
